MB Energy inaugurates Hydrogen Refuelling Station for trucks in Lübeck

Published on 30 Jan 2026 • 3 min read

On 29th January, the MB Energy group celebrated a key achievement in its commitment to develop a viable hydrogen infrastructure: the inauguration of its hydrogen refuelling station for heavy duty vehicles (HDVs) in Lübeck.

Construction began after the official building permit was received in July 2025 and the official opening was attended by key customers, partners and other stakeholders, including Jan Lindenau, Mayor of the Hanseatic City of Lübeck.

The station, designed by Hypion, has a daily capacity of up to 2,000 kilograms of hydrogen and can refuel up to 50 trucks per day. Strategically located near the A1 and A20 motorway junction, where the MB Energy group already operates a diesel refuelling facility, the new hydrogen station will be seamlessly integrated into the existing infrastructure of the MB Energy group’s commercial road transport unit. The unit operates more than 400 conventional fuels stations within the tankpool24 network.

“It is a proud moment for us to inaugurate this station today,”

says Philipp Kroepels, Director New Energy at MB Energy.

“Thanks to our team, as well as our partners and suppliers, who have worked hard over the last months to finalise construction, we are turning a vision into a tangible contribution to Germany’s hydrogen economy.”

The project received funding from the German Federal Ministry for Transport under the KsNI programme, which supports climate-friendly commercial vehicle technologies and infrastructure.

“This station is a great addition to our network, and we look forward to welcoming both existing and new customers here, thereby extending the range of solutions we are able to offer”,

Florian Lückmann, Director Commercial Road Transport at MB Energy adds.

“With short refuelling times, long ranges, and no compromise on payload, hydrogen offers real-world benefits for commercial logistics and long-haul transport. This is just the beginning—we are committed to developing a reliable and scalable refuelling network for offering carbonless energy products for trucks.”

The MB Energy group continues to advance its multi-fuel strategy by investing in hydrogen, biofuels, and e-fuels to provide tailored solutions for its customers’ decarbonisation journeys. In 2025, the MB Energy group established hydrogen refuelling stations in Sweden through its Swedish operations and secured grants for additional sites.

The Lübeck project has been developed, planned and realised in close collaboration with Hypion GmbH, a specialist in hydrogen infrastructure and project development.

“With the opening of the Lübeck H2 Hub, we have now completed the second high-performance hydrogen filling station project for heavy-duty mobility in Schleswig-Holstein, adding to the one in Neumünster,”

emphasises Dr Stefan Rehm, Managing Director of Hypion.

“As a project developer and pioneer in the sustainable hydrogen market, working with strong and ambitious partners such as MB Energy enables us to lay the groundwork early on so that emission-free transport, in this case hydrogen-powered, can become established within the near future. This is something we are happy to contribute to.”

The hydrogen station will operate as part of the tankpool24 network, which includes over 2,000 fuelling locations across Europe and more than 750 in Germany. The MB Energy group’s commercial road transport unit is responsible for its integration and management.

With now three hydrogen station fully operational, MB Energy underscores its ambition to enable future-oriented commercial transport solutions and accelerate the energy transition in the mobility sector.
