More charging points at visitor spots can aid fleet transition to net zero

More charging points at visitor spots can aid fleet transition to net zero
Future of Roads Minister, Lilian Greenwood, is urging tourist destinations to install more electric vehicle (EV) charge points to accelerate decarbonisation efforts, a move supported by the Road Haulage Association (RHA).

Richard Smith, RHA Managing Director, said:

"It’s encouraging that the Future of Roads Minister is urging tourist destinations to offer electric vehicle points.

It makes perfect commercial sense to increase charging capacity at sites which would help encourage more visitors through the door – and would take some of the strain from public charging infrastructure.

It would also benefit coach, haulage, and van operators who have electric vehicles – or are considering bringing them into their fleets – if they know they can recharge onsite once they’ve dropped off people and goods.

Our recent survey revealed that 75 percent of coach operators and 70 percent of hauliers have no current plans to bring zero-emission vehicles on board, with a lack of public charging facilities being a key blocker. We continue to campaign for more electric charging infrastructure on our road networks to stimulate the transition away from diesel. Similar moves at visitor destinations will help.”
