IVECO at the Tour d’Europe: Biomethane Leads the Transition to Sustainable Mobility

IVECO is taking part in the Tour d’Europe 2025 - an initiative involving the entire European automotive value chain, with over 30 partners - aimed at raising awareness about the role of renewable fuels in achieving climate neutrality by 2050, as outlined in the European Green Deal.

IVECO joins the Tour- which began last March in Lisbon - with its new S-Way LNG truck powered by biomethane. The company is actively demonstrating that renewable gas effectively reduces CO₂ emissions and offers a concrete, scalable solution for decarbonising commercial road transport. Thanks to a well‑established and expanding European refuelling network of around 800 stations, international routes can already be covered using a truck powered exclusively by bio‑LNG.

Running through June, the project commercial vehicles powered by biomethane, HVO, and bioethanol travel across Europe, with events fostering dialogue between supply chain players and policymakers on the effectiveness of renewable fuels and their decarbonization potential for the transport sector.

During the Tour, Bosch’s Digital Fuel Twin methodology will be tested - a solution that enables digital traceability of renewable fuel and carbon emissions across the entire supply chain via data exchange between vehicle and fueling station.

Through our participation in the Tour d’Europe, we aim to show that biomethane is a practical, ready-to-use solution for long-haul operations - offering uncompromised performance, competitive Total Cost of Ownership, and a significant reduction in CO₂ emissions. The IVECO S-Way makes this opportunity real for our customers. The arrival of the Tour in Brussels for the closing stop is a call to action for European lawmakers to ensure biofuels are duly considered in CO₂ regulations for their potential to decarbonize freight logistics,” said Giandomenico Fioretti, Head of Alternative Propulsion Business Development at IVECO.

Biomethane: A Concrete Example of Circular Economy

Biomethane, produced from organic waste and residues, is a renewable and circular fuel that transforms waste into clean energy—delivering environmental, economic, and social benefits. It is a prime example of the circular economy applied to transport.

Fully compatible with Europe’s existing LNG infrastructure, biomethane is available now for immediate use. IVECO is working closely with leading European gas providers to ensure that all routes covered during the Tour – across Italy, Austria, Germany, France, and Belgium - are powered 100% by bio-LNG.

Following the press conference held at Bosch’s headquarters in Turin, the IVECO S-Way powered by biomethane was displayed at the EniLive gas station in Via Botticelli.

A Pioneer in Sustainable Heavy Transport, and a Champion of the Multi-Energy Approach

IVECO has been pioneering alternative propulsion for over two decades - from its first natural gas vehicles to today’s full LNG/CNG and bio-LNG/CNG range - consistently leading the way toward more sustainable heavy transport and addressing the challenges of the energy transition.

Participation in the Tour d’Europe aligns with IVECO’s broader multi-energy strategy, which aims to provide diverse, mature technologies that meet the decarbonization needs of the transport industry. This strategy is built on the coexistence of several propulsion solutions - such as HVO and biomethane, electricity, and hydrogen - depending on specific missions and infrastructure availability.

This technology-neutral approach empowers customers to choose the best-fit solution for their business today, accelerating the shift to zero-emission transport without compromising performance or profitability.

More Power, Fewer Emissions: Customer Benefits

IVECO joins the Tour with its latest-generation S-Way LNG truck. Equipped with the new 500 hp xCURSOR 13 Natural Gas engine by FPT Industrial and a range of up to 1,700 km, the truck delivers top-tier performance while significantly lowering its environmental footprint. Compared to the previous model, improvements in the powertrain and aerodynamics achieve up to 11% greater fuel efficiency and CO₂ reduction.

Following the recent normalization of gas prices - after the spikes caused by global geopolitical factors - and combined with fuel efficiency and government incentives, these vehicles are a strategic solution for fleet operators aiming to optimize Total Cost of Ownership (TCO).

IVECO remains committed to investing in sustainable innovation, offering its customers vehicles that protect the environment while enhancing operational profitability.
